Motorhome-World -- an RV manufacturer and dealer located just outside Cape Town in South Africa -- has debuted a new Iveco Daily-based 4x4 motorhome dubbed the “Discoverer Xtreme.” Launched at the 2013 Beeld Show in Midrand, the rugged off-road RV -- mounted on Iveco’s 55S15W MWB chassis -- can handle a variety of terrain from the sandy beaches of the former Cape Colony and the rolling grasslands of the African veldt to the bush trails in the Kruger National Park.
Mounted on a torsion-free sub frame, the 3400mm (134 inch) wheelbase Discoverer Xtreme incorporates three diff locks (front, centre and rear) plus a low range transfer case. In addition, the Xtreme’s lofty 300mm (11.8 inch) ground clearance, coupled with a 50 degree approach and 30 degree departure angle, provides RVers with a very capable overlanding vehicle.
Power for the Iveco is provided courtesy of a 3.0 litre common rail turbo diesel engine -- developing 140 HP and delivering 350 NM torque -- mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, whilst an off-the-grid camping capability -- supplied via an 180ah deep cycle battery coupled to a 2000 watt inverter -- ensures that you’ll be able to run a TV/DVD combo, brew a cuppa or charge your iPad and iPhone whilst on safari.
Outfitted with 140 litre fresh water tanks, a 180 litre fridge/freezer and an innovative pull-out interior-exterior galley with an integral sink and two-burner stove, the Discoverer Xtreme is certainly a good first effort from a company that only began RV manufacturing in 2002. However, it has to be said that the prototype's floor plan clearly lacks the refinement of Unicat’s EX 37, a superlative Iveco Daily-based RV offering from the storied German expedition-grade RV manufacturer.
Nevertheless, with the Discoverer Xtreme still very much in its infancy -- and a raft of additional accessories and amenities promised in future variants -- South African RVers have much to look forward to in the coming months.
