Finninsh designer Paola Suhonen's welcome to New York fashion Week ss2011 was a lawsuit from Ivana Trump. The former wife of Apprentice star Donald Trump was offended by the name of Suhonen's line; seems the name IVANA can only be used by one person. Paola soldiered on and made her triumphant debut at Lincoln Center anyway. Her line, IVANAHelsinki rolled out a cheeky collection named 'Where the F**K is my Sailor?" and got the attention she deserved.
The character that she designs for is deeply autobiographical. Suhonen says "I could call myself a gypsy or vagabond...', exactly the type of girl who'd love her clothing. Last season's ironed hair and heavy bangs (calling to mind Nico of the Velvet Underground) gave way to smooth Holly Golightly beehives. Finnish embroidery embellishes simple a line shapes that flatter most figures. A palette of plum, emerald green, black, and cream is rich and will resonate with shoppers as temperatures drop and holiday parties begin. The result is a sweetly youthful collection that reflects a love of adventure and beauty.
