Ivan Neville brings Dumpstaphunk to Little Rock

New Orleans funk rockers Dumpstaphunk brought their high energy show to the Rev Room in Little Rock on Friday, July 11, 2014. The band was formed by Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville, who’s played in the past with his dad in the Neville Brothers. Ivan sings and plays organ. Tony Hall and Nick Daniels also contribute vocals and are the two bass players in the band, though Hall sometimes switches to guitar. Cousin Ian Neville plays guitar and Nikki Glaspie is on drums.

The show started at 9:30 with the eight man jazz-funk band the Funkanites warming up the crowd. Dumpstaphunk took the stage about 10:50, opening with the rowdy “Gas Man,” then plowing into “Everybody Want Sum.”

Some of the highlights of the show included “Deeper,” “Put it in the Dumpsta,” which had the crowd yelling along with the band, and hard rocking version of the song “Liar” made famous by Argent and Three Dog Night. The band also did a tribute to the recently deceased Bobby Womack, with a rocking cover of “Nobody Wants You When You’re Down and Out,” complete with extended guitar solos.

After a powerful hour and a half show that included a whole lot of jam band style funk, the band came back out for a two song encore, closing with “Water.” Each musician played extraordinarily well the entire night, and had fun with the Little Rock crowd.

Arkansas fans will have the chance to catch Dumpstaphunk again in October as they play Yonder Mountain String Band's Harvest Music Festival in Ozark, Arkansas.
