IU football assistant leaves for USC

Mike Ekeler, who served as Indiana University's co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, has left the program to accept a position on Southern California's defensive staff.

IU head coach Kevin Wilson confirmed the move via his Twitter account. “Mike Ekeler has accepted a job at Southern Cal,” Wilson said on his Twitter account. “He is an excellent coach and we appreciate the contributions he made to our program. We wish Mike, Barbie and their family continued success at USC. We will take our time to find the best fit for #iufb and Indiana University from what we know will be a strong pool of candidates.”

Doug Mallory is IU's current co-defensive coordinator. Although the defense has struggled mightily in recent years, including under Ekeler and Mallory's direction, Ekeler had gained the reputation as a solid coach and high energy recruiter.

It marks the second staff defection in the offseason. Former IU player and assistant Mark Hagen left in January to join Texas A&M's staff.

The Hoosiers open spring practice on March 2.
