Italy edged closer to qualifying for the World Cup next year in Brazil as it defeated Bulgaria on Friday afternoon in Palermo, Italy. The victory put the Italians seven points ahead of second place team, Bulgaria, in Group B of the UEFA qualifiers.
It was reported on Friday that Italy defeated Bulgaria with a lone goal by Alberto Gilardino. The goal was made from a header in the 38th minute of the game.
Bulgaria went to Italy establish a difficult victory. Even if Bulgaria would have won, the three points would not have been enough to take the lead in Group B, as the Italians were already ahead with four points.
In any case, the Italians secured their victory at home and extending their lead in points. Now, the Italians only have three games left, and a another victory will secure the spot to qualify for the World Cup.
Third place Czech Republic lost to Armenia 2-1. The Czechs hosted Armenia, and the loss was a huge upset. The Czech Republic needed the victory to surpass Bulgaria into second place.
Second place still has a chance to qualify through a round-robin playoff match against another second place team from another group.
The next game for Italy is against the Czech Republic in another home game scheduled for Tuesday.
