Italy defeated England 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in the match of the day of day three of the World Cup. Both teams are candidates to make it out of Group D but had to face each other in the first game as Italy took to victory.
As reported on Saturday, the Italian team scored first in the 35th minute of the game with a shot by Claudio Marchisio. The shot came from outside the box after veteran Andrea Pirlo faked to receive a pass from the corner. Pirlo let the ball go through his legs as Marchisio picked it up from five yards outside the box and shot a strong grounder that passed a couple of English defender and into the corner of the net.
Two minutes later, Wayne Rooney drove up the left side and centered a beautiful pass into the box. Forward Daniel Sturridge met the ball with his right foot and volleyed the sphere into the net as Italian goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu dove but did not accomplish the block.
Right before the half ended, Italian forward Mario Balotelli created danger in the box as English goalkeeper Joe Hart came out to meet him. Balotelli chipped the ball over Hart but the ball was saved at the line by an English defender who headed the ball over the crossbar.
It was not until the second half that Italy took the victory with a goal by Mario Balotelli in the 50th minute. The ball was centered from the right side as Balotelli came up the back and headed the ball into the net, squeezing it between the goalkeeper Joe Hart and his right post.
With this victory, Italy is now tied with Costa Rica with three points each. Costa Rica had defeated Uruguay 3-1 in a shocking World Cup upset earlier in the day.
Italy will play Costa Rica on Friday while England will face Uruguay. It is predicted that England, Italy, or Uruguay will advanced from this group. So far, Italy is the only one on the right track from what is expected out of this group.
