Italian website features treasure trove of candid '65 Beatles photos

Some very interesting photos (and apparently unpublished) photos of the Beatles in Italy in 1965 can be found on the Italian website Archive Riccardi. The website says they are being displayed on the site for the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' Decca audition, which was New Year's Day.

The 66 photos show the Beatles at a press conference (and with some fans in the images) prior to their four concerts over two days at Teatro Adriano and during the show itself. One series of images shows the scene outside the Beatles' hotel with fans and a banner advertising the show. According to Mark Lewisohn in "The Beatles Live," none of the four shows sold out.

The photos are dated 1964, but the Beatles didn't play Teatro Adriano until June 27-28, 1965. The Beatles' hairstyles in the photos are clearly closer to their look in "Help!" than "A Hard Day's Night."

The photos outside the hotel display some of the turmoil caused by the Beatles' visit and show authorities keeping a close eye on fans. The press conference pictures show the Beatles in a somewhat relaxed mood. You can glimpse Brian Epstein and Neil Aspinall in at least one of the photos.

The concert photos show the full stage with the Beatles performing and also include several individual shots.

There's no indication these pictures are about to be published anywhere, which is a real shame, given how nice they are.  The quality on most is excellent, though a few are grainy and may have been photographed from a newspaper.

Be patient if you want to see them all -- they load very slowly. And all the photos have a huge mark of the website's name on the pictures.

But no matter. This is a wonderful exhibit of pictures. Enjoy.
