Most likely it means, once again, that the fall gems have yet to arrive. The traditionally slow September had a bright spot with the $35 million win for the animated 3D flick but, overall, another weak weekend. One could see that more clearly when looking at the list. That is a big jump from No. 1 to No. 2.
Surprising to some may be the low turnout for Ron Howard's "Rush." A Formula One flick that tries to be more than a movie about care racing. It does, but, in the end, it is about racing.
Even more disappointing could be the idea that "Baggage Claim" beat out the adult comedy "Don Jon." The latter being a fresh take on today's romance scene, fleshed out with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson. One could wonder how much better "Baggage Claim" could have done if it was in more theaters. Look at "Baggage Claim" as a mini-surprise and "Don Jon" as a mini-disappointment. In the end, this one is too close to call right now.
1. "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" - $35 million
2. "Prisoners" - $11.2 million
3. "Rush" - $10.3 million
4. "Baggage Claim" - $9.3 million
5. "Don Jon" - $9 million
Now, enter October and not only is that prime time to start getting back to the movies, Halloween is near, plus the holidays.
There is a gut feeling brewing about last week's winner, "Prisoners." With two solid lead performances by Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman, could they reappear come award time? Or, at least get a mention here and there?
Each year, a couple surprises pop out. It is time to think about a few before they happen. One such surprise at the box office has been "Instructions Not Included," which is now the highest grossing Spanish-language movie in the U.S. Its total of $38 million passed the $37.6 million “Pan’s Labyrinth” took in in 2006.
In the end, however, as the numbers linger where they are in late August and through September, perhaps it is time for a new thought process for the time at the box office. Or maybe they need a vacation, too. Sometimes it thinks that Hollywood takes a collective vacation at the same time.
