WINNIPEG― It was party time in the capital of Manitoba on Friday and Saturday nights.
From 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. the Winnipeg Convention Centre was awash with the sights and sounds of the Mardi Gras celebrations, New Orleans style. The place was brimming with thousands of entertainers, painted bodies and animated visitors, many of whom had chosen to dress in their best carnivalesque costumes. They roamed the booths on Bourbon Street, in search of hats, beads, boas, jewelry, novelty items, and much more.
And let us not forget the giant, 200-seat Food, Oyster and Wine Bar, which featured the best the bayou can offer: freshly shucked oysters, peel-and-eat shrimp, alligator fritters, Louisiana crab cakes, southern fried Cajun pickle spears, po’ boy sandwiches, chicken creole, gumbo, spicy sausage, and sweet potato fries.
When it comes to rocking music and energetic dance moves, you could count on Rockin' Dopsie (pronounced Doop' see) and The Zydeco Twisters, one of the greatest living Zydeco bands in the world, to bring their blend of Creole, Cajun, R&B, folk and French fiddle music to the stage. The group comprises of leader Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. (rub board and vocals), Tiger Dopsie (drums and vocals), Anthony Dopsie (accordion), and various other artists who play the bass, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, saxophone, trumpet, and keyboard.
See you at Mardi Gras next year!
