It takes just one

There is no excuse for domestic violence, which plagues our society.  It affects everyone, even children.  It will take caring intervention to end the cycle of abuse.  It will take everyone getting involved to make a difference.

First, get educated on domestic violence.  Education is the key; knowledge is power.  Learn what domestic violence is; the forms of domestic violence; the warning signs for an abuser and how it affects society.  Understand the cycle of abuse and how it impacts children and teenagers; the barriers of why women stay and the complexity of why men abuse.  Know the signs to look for in women, children and teenagers and how to help them.

Next, speak out so it stops!  Be family!  Be a friend!  Be a neighbor!  Be a teacher!  Be a co-worker!  Be an employer!  Do not pretend it doesn’t exist!  Do not make excuses – “I can’t be bothered”, “I don’t have time”, or “It’s no one’s business”!  Get involved!  Be supportive! Become a voice!  Help make a “victim” into a survivor!

And simply, volunteer, or support local shelters, or donate.  It doesn’t take much effort, just a little time and a giving attitude full of hope.  Check your local area for shelters and organizations.  Here are two helpful sites:  Indiana Domestic Violence Resources – An Abuse, Rape, and Domestic Violence Aid and Resource Collection (aardvarc.org); and Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (icadvinc.org).  The littlest glimpse of help goes a long way.

It takes just one person to start making a difference – to stand tall, proud, and strong – to fight against domestic violence and end the cycle of abuse.  Get involved!  There is power in numbers!
