IT TAKES A VILLAGE
"I chose that old African proverb to title my book because it offers a timeless reminder that children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them." – Hillary Clinton speech, "It takes a village to raise a child," Tuesday, August 27, 1996.
The kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls in Nigeria proves that not only Hillary Clinton's book title It Takes A Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us but the "old African proverb" from which she took it were only half right; in Africa it takes a village full of very heavily armed gun-toting people to raise a child.
The local police in Nigeria have guns, just as the local police in America have guns. The local "militants" in Nigeria have guns, just as the local gangbangers in America have guns.
The big difference in most of America's cities is that moms and dads and other citizens have a right to be armed as well.
The big difference in Africa is that the militants out-gun the police, the gangbangers, the military and, obviously, the unarmed parents.
Because of the immense social and cultural differences between the Third World African village where the schoolgirls were kidnapped and the modern American society where our own children go to school means that such a thing couldn't happen here.
Except that it does.
Not exactly the same things, by the same kinds of people, for the same reasons, in the same numbers, but it does happen here.
It happens in our schools because American schools, like the schools in that Nigerian village, are Gun Free Zones.
But not any more in Nigeria.
AN AP article reported that Nigerian villagers learned that the Boko Haram terrorists who kidnapped the schoolgirls were planning another attack, so they armed themselves and formed vigilante groups. They succeeded in killing and capturing scores of militants and offered the survivors in exchange for their girls.
Channeling Hillary again, "...children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them." Denying citizens the right to carry and use guns – the most effective means of defense – proves that "the whole of society" in America does not care enough to provide for them.
Libertarians aren't averse to raising their children in a village as long as it's a village of free and voluntary individuals.
