It's Summer! Delilah Dawson turns up the heat in her kitchen

It's summertime! That is everywhere but in Seattle. I've heard rumors that the rest of the world is having the hottest summer on record. Here it feels like Fall. But, for erotic writers the heat is always turned up.

I caught up with Delilah Dawson and asked:

What do you like best about summer?

"I like heat, be it in tongue-tingling, spicy food, or in a hot July day when I find myself sweltering in the shade. And although I should probably not admit it, I like the feel of sweat (in the 'glistening' sense, not the 'Dear God, I'm baking!' sense). Is it any wonder that I like heat in my erotic romance novels?

For me, the moment of attraction between the hero and heroine of a novel has to have some sizzle for the story to really get cooking. I've always enjoyed reading books where the hero and heroine are emotionally and physically naked to each other, because it adds another level of intimacy. It's just a moment in time, a spark that has all the potential of fading out, or becoming a raging fire. It's those magical moments that have all the elements of a fantasy.

If you thought there was a chance that revealing your sexual fantasies would match you up to a perfect soul mate, would you do it?

As a writer of fiction, that question was too enticing to be left unexplored ...thus my Orchid Soul trilogy.

All three books are based on people who are helping out a mutual friend by doing some preliminary testing on a dating service, called Orchid Soul. Unlike other dating services, Orchid Soul matches people up by analyzing their sexual fantasies. How tempting would it be to submit a detailed fantasy if no one knew it was yours? In all three books, the system has a glitch, which causes the anonymous testing to fail and reveal the identity of the testers (and their fantasies) to one other. How would the characters deal with their identities being unmasked by a computer system? Once that Pandora's box is opened, would one perfect fantasy be enough or would the testers be brave enough to ask for more? Would they ever be able to see beyond the fantasies for a relationship to progress? I won't give anything else away, but you are welcome to stop by my website (www.DelilahDawson.com/books.html) and read the excerpts.

So, what is this stuff that fantasies are made of, and why are so many of us embarrassed to tell them? Well, the obvious answer is that fantasies are very intimate designer dreams that we create to arouse ourselves. They are our naughty little secrets that, more often than not, have nothing to do with reality. Revealing a fantasy involves an incredible amount of trust.

My research on the subject found that there are various, complicated reasons for why we have fantasies. In some cases, the process works like therapy to help some people escape psychological or physical abuse. In other cases, it fulfills an emotional or physical craving, some which may seem too taboo or bizarre to the average person. There are some that are simple and brief, while others seem to have never-ending longevity. Who hasn't walked away from a movie with sexy actors and not had a little fantasy about it? Team Vampire versus Team Werewolf anyone? We keep our fantasies safe and often unspoken, fearing judgment, but we love to see them unfold in movies and books.

That's the beauty of being an erotic romance writer! Writing is a great way to explore our characters and give them sensuous and exciting lives, while taking the liberty to flush out any fantasy our muse may bring us. We know that romance readers are looking to escape reality for a while, and erotica is a great way to probe into a fantasy world where there may be danger, angst, or even tragic moments, but a guaranteed happy ending. Maybe not perfect one, but a happy.

So if you like spice and heat, step into my kitchen and read something erotic. I hope it will put you in a happy place, and give you something to fantasize about.

Happy Reading!"
