Well, it looks like those divorce rumors were true after all. Media outlets are reporting that actress Melanie Griffith, 56, has filed for divorce from her husband of 18-years, 53-year-old actor Antonio Banderas citing irreconcilable differences. Although the legal documents do not list the date of separation, Griffith is asking for spousal support, sole physical and joint legal custody as well as child support for their 17-year-old daughter Stella who was born four months after the two married.
The celebrity couple have battled and addressed break-up rumors before over the years along with individual struggles. For example, Griffith is no stranger to rehab centers having undergone treatment for addiction to painkillers.
“We have had as many problems as anybody. We’ve never hidden it,” Banderas once told AARP magazine. “We’ve been open about addictions, in the case of Melanie. She has overcome her problems beautifully. I didn’t know she was so strong. It makes me love her even more, because she has been an unbelievable lion fighting, and she got it.”
Griffith, who has two other children from previous relationships, has been married twice to actor Don Johnson. She’s also been married to actor Steve Bauer. This will be the fourth divorce for Griffith and the second for Banderas.
Sources say the divorce is amicable. However, the sticking point may be when time comes to divvy up the assets since they own loads of property in the U.S. and Spain.
