Kennesaw State University President, Dr. Dan Papp, announced the approval of its request to add a football program to its athletics department at a news conference held on Feb. 14, 2013.
"It's Our Time," the words that confirm the football program was finally approved.
The football team will start its first official season in 2015, with home games held at the newly named Fifth Third Bank Stadium.
“Are you ready for some football?” Papp asked in his opening remarks to a crowd of over 1,000 students, faculty, alumni and guests.
“We are a major university in the south. Without football, it is hard to be a major university in the south and we are well on our way towards becoming a national university.” Papp said.
Papp confirmed the third largest university in Georgia finally established a NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Program along with a partnership with Fifth Third Bank.
Fifth Third Bank, agreed to sponsor KSU's football program. The bank will also fund improvements to the KSU Stadium, other athletic programs and facilities.
The bank is considered the "Official Bank of Kennesaw State Athletics."
Speakers at the conference included legendary University of Georgia Coach Vince Dooley who is also the Chairman of the Football Exploratory Committee at KSU and Athletics Director, Vaughn Williams.
The approval was the last step in the six-year process of the university's efforts to add a football program to its athletics department.
The room was filled with anticipation and enthusiastic energy as the speakers relayed the news to the crowd.
KSU has over 24,000 students and the numbers continue to increase.
The addition of the football team marks another milestone in the growing university's path.
Final preparations are underway but it is confirmed that the football team will be ready to play in the 2015 season.
