I thoroughly enjoy watching the TV show The Big Bang Theory. It makes being a nerd fashionable. The idiosyncrasies and dysfunction of the characters (Leonard, Sheldon, Howard, Rajesh, and Penny) give us all hope that we are okay just as we are. When I was growing up, being a nerd was not cool. I desired good grades but did not want to be categorized as a geek or a nerd. Teasing was relentless and at times unbearable. Kids nowadays are subject to bullying and teasing not only in person but, on the internet. There have been instances of children committing suicide as a result to ongoing teasing. I think that The Big Bang Theory is a good show for children (of a certain age of course) to view. It brings humanity to being gifted and also allows kids to see how it is to be a gifted adult. All the teasing, all the jokes, will fall away and be overshadowed by a bright future. Childhood is so fleeting and those years will slip quickly by. Use real-life examples to express to your child that it is ok and completely acceptable to be a nerd or a geek. Take it from someone who knows—no one can do you better than you.
Peace & Blessings,
