It’s not too late to make new Christmas memories! Area neighborhoods have been spreading the holiday cheer since late November and continue to share a piece of the magic with Houstonians and visitors. If your family and out of town guests are looking for neighborhoods in and around Houston to tour for Christmas, consider the following areas. For an added bonus, make a complete weekend car tour out of it complete with hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies and fun holiday music. Not only will the tour allow you to travel through the beautiful neighborhoods in Greater Houston, but it is also a time to start new holiday traditions with your family.
1) Prestonwood Forest – Hwy. 249: This is considered the Grande Dame of holiday neighborhood tours. The“Nite of Lights” event is a 38 year old tradition with almost the entire neighborhood participating. Continuing through December 29, 2013, participants present their most creative and dramatic holiday lights and displays. From 6:00pm – 10:00pm each night (and until 11pm on weekends), this quiet neighborhood in the northern part of Houston becomes alive with the holiday spirit. Judging has already occurred, but you and your family can drive through and see this year’s winners. Participants competed for prizes in various categories including Best House, Best Lamp Post, Best Mailbox and Best Block. Winning homes will be indicated with yard signs viewable to the public. For a fun outing, bring a car full of your favorite family members, turn off your headlights and drive slowly through the winter wonderland of Prestonwood Forest. You won’t soon forget the experience.
2) Dickinson Festival of Lights - Paul Hopkins Park Dickinson, Texas: The 16th Annual Festival lasts through January 1, 2014. What began as an idea between two neighbors has grown into a community event.
