It's National Read Across America Day

Those of you who are staying home due to the big snowstorm across much of the country will be able to very easily celebrate today’s Read Across America Day. This National Education Association sponsored event is in recognition of the birthday of famous author Theodor Seuss Geisel – who many of you know fondly as Dr. Seuss. The idea is to spend at least an hour today reading to children.

Choose any book. The book does not matter. Studies have shown that when children are read to they appreciate books and better understand the importance of books and reading in their lives.

To be totally fair, you really do not have to wear your “Cat in the Hat” Dr. Seuss hat while reading to your kids. You do not have to cook “Green Eggs and Ham” and eat them while reading “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. In fact, you can read just about any book that you choose.

However, reading a Dr. Seuss book to your children on the author’s birthday would be pretty cool too.

Enjoy National Read Across America Day.
