When it comes to paying back their community, the employees of Associates Therapeutic Massage went the distance this year. During four weeks inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Month, the staff said thank you to the Clinton Township area by launching a unique campaign.

The winner of Best Massage for 2013 through WDIV-TV Local 4/ClickOnDetroit competition, Associates wanted to spread the love through a hands-on approach on more ways than one. Owner Rebecca Scott, 57, brainstormed ideas with her staff to zero in on attempts to honor the townships’ five fire departments between February 10 and March 10.

“We wanted them to know how much we appreciate all they do, putting their lives on the line every day,” said receptionist Wendy Williams, who personally delivered gifts to the stations. “And, this idea gave us the chance to reach out to them a little to pay them back.”

Although only three firehouses were accessible, Williams says that didn’t deter their efforts.

The 44-year-old Fraser resident baked a cookie basket for each station that greeted them, and presented the first fireman she saw at each location with a free massage and a group package with discount coupons. She credits Scott’s generous nature for spearheading great community relations.

Scott and her staff also mounted a bookmark campaign at assorted area locales. Each handmade bookmark explained the Random Acts of Kindness concept, asking each recipient to “pay it forward.”

Scott, who lives in Macomb Township, has owned the 20-year business at its present location for six years, and offers a full line of massage services. Thirteen masseuses work within the six rooms that encompass a calming atmosphere. They use hot stones, salt and sugar spa body scrubs, paraffin wax dips and other healing methods with clients, who consistently rate them superior through customer feedback both online and in contests, like Channel 4’s Best of Detroit.

Scott also sells oils and makes ice packs for her customers as an added service.

There is a couple’s room available, with associated deals -- and it’s a popular destination during romantic visits, such as on Valentine’s Day.

“When you come here, you receive a full hands-on hour’s massage,” said Williams. “We never take time out to do paperwork or for the undressing prep. We tell people to allow an hour and a half here, so they receive the full one-hour massage that is our business trademark.”

Within mere weeks after the station visits, Williams says firefighters arrived to redeem their coupons in Associates’ relaxing atmosphere. The local response has led to plans to repeat the campaign as well as create a Mother’s Day package and incorporate a yoga class.
