It's Friday - duck, appendices, green Saturn

It's Friday - duck (Discover)

On February 15th, an asteroid makes a near-miss with the Earth. It's not a huge asteroid, only 150 feet wide, but you'd still rather it didn't hit. It won't, but only by a 15-minute gap. It will come so close, it will fly under the orbits of communications satellites.

Appendices (ScienceNow)

The appendix is famous for being useless, the classic vestigial organ. But in recent years there have been suspicions that it might have some use after all. Perhaps it acts as a reservoir for helpful bacteria. In any case, it must have been useful to someone somewhere for something - recent genetic analysis finds that mammals have evolved the appendix independently over thirty times.

Green Saturn (Discover)

The Cassini probe brings us this great back-lit image of Saturn.
