Next Thursday, scores of green, gold and white clad Hornet fans will swarm into the identically colored seats at the X, thanks to a pair of goals from Garrett Wait that led Edina to a 5-1 win over the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars in the Section 2AA championship game Wednesday night at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.
It was the eight straight section title for Edina. Last year, they won the state Class AA championship by beating the Hill-Murray Pioneers. They have won 11 state titles and are en route toward number 12.
Dylan Malmquist picked up an assist on the Hornets first goal, sliding the puck to Wait and he didn't have to wait to put Edina on the board since he picked up a goal. The Hornets showed precision passing on their second goal when .Miguel Fidler fed Cullen Munson and he scored from the right doorstep. But the Jaguars prevented a shut out as Kyle Wendorf's shot went off the glove of Hornet goalie Andrew Rohkohl and crossed the goal line.
Edina added a goal in the second period from Malmquist, who got a pass from Ben Foley, went along the side boards and drilled the puck into the net.
The Hornets solidified their Class AA title defense with two third period goals. Munson found Fidler and he went around the net and put it past Martens. Wait would score his second goal :45 later as Martens played toward the left side of the crease and it created an opening for the Edina sophomore to tally.
Edina out shot Jefferson 31-11.
Tyler Nanne is the grandson of former Minnesota North Star Lou Nanne. He will be playing next season at Ohio St.
The Hornets increased their record to 22-4-1 and will play in the Class AA quarterfinals Thursday, March 5 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Jaguars wrap up the season with a record of 15-11-2.
