It's Earth Day in Oregon

Oregon is mostly celebrating in the midst of rain and fog around this time of year, but not today, not on Earth day 2011.  The sun is shining and Mother Earth has come out to say hello on her day!

Oregon state-wide is celebrating Earth Day with a bang. From the campus of Oregon State University Grower's Club in Corvallis and Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland, to the sustainable transportation options offered in and around the Eugene area. The Rogue Valley Earth Day Celebration is also being held for the southern end of the state in the Jacksonville and Ashland area.  With the state-wide Earth Day awareness celebrations you are sure to find an event in your own area to help bring forth your Earth Day needs.  To find an event in your own area of Oregon visit Billion Acts of Green.

Earth Day was started in 1970 in New York by senator Gaylord Nelson to help bring awareness and consciousness to how we, as humans, are affecting the earth as a whole.  Since that time the topic of planet-saving as sprung up worldwide and holidays have been made through this change. With just a little bit of changes you can make a big difference in how you help the environment.  Simple changes such as, changing out your light bulbs for ones that last longer, picking reusable containers over Styrofoam, and starting your own household recycling program.  Get your family involved, then you friends, then your neighborhood and watch how small changes can really have a big affect.

Not just on today, but make everyday an Earth Day change.  Take shorter showers, wash with a full load of clothes and with cold water, change how you buy products, as well.  Look for ones that are better for you and the planet.  If your mind set is that everyday is Earth Day, your small changes will eventually turn into habits and your life will be a lot better and so will the planet's future.

Happy Earth Day, Oregon! Now go hug a tree in the name of Mother Nature!
