It’s Darkout: Shining light on a new sandbox game

You know someone is sick of fanboys when they write in their product description “our game had been in production before Starbound’s announcement.” Unfortunate and unlikely to stem the cries of “Starbound clone” but at the same time, just what is Darkout?

Darkout is a two dimensional sandbox game with a vague similarity to Terraria. Players are dropped into an unexplored world with minimal equipment and have to craft a variety of tools, weapons, and buildings to survive. However that is where the similarities end. Darkout takes players to a distant world shrouded in perpetual darkness. Nocturnal alien creatures have invaded and terraformed the planet to their liking. As one of the human refugees trying to escape, your stasis pod is jettisoned in order to keep the larger ship afloat. One life to save thousands might be a small comfort to you when it’s yours but perhaps there is still a chance to escape.

As the synopsis suggests, light is important in Darkout; more so then it ever was in Terraria and Minecraft. Enemies are weakened when exposed to bright lights and can teleport in shadows. As such much of the player’s survival will depend on their ability to manipulate ambient light sources as it does on mastery of “traditional” mechanics laid down by its predecessors in the genre. More as it becomes available, until then check out Darkout at their official website and their Steam Greenlight page.
