September 23rd is Celebrate Bisexuality Day, an annual event that celebrates bisexuals and the world-wide bisexual community. Many events and activities are held all over the world in honor of Bisexuality Day.The yearly occassion provides an opportunity for people around the world to learn more about bisexuals and the issues they must face.
Activists Wendy Curry, Michael Page and Gigi Raven Wilbur, came up with the idea in 1999 in response to biphobia, the fear, hatred or intolerance of bisexuals. Bisexuals face unique challenges at home, at school and at work and often have to contend with various myths and stereotypes. The annual event not only helps to dispel those inaccurate stereotypes, but also addresses hate crimes and biphobic bullying. Sadly, many people endure cruel and vicious bullying because of their sexual orientation. And bullying, whether it takes place online or in person, can have deadly consequences.
