It’s been three years, now; a baker’s dozen of my favorite posts

On February 6, 2009 I submitted my first article as the Houston Cheap Examiner for Examiner.com.  It has been enjoyable, and, thankfully, not terribly difficult for me to post regular articles.  Houston provides a broad canvas for articles related to inexpensive dining.

Here are a baker’s dozen of my favorite ones since I started three years ago.

St. Paddy's, in Houston or anywhere, why is food an afterthought?” – March 13, 2009
-- I was curious about this myself before stumbling on an answer while doing research for another project.

Imperial pints actually provide about 40% more beer, it's true....” – June 3, 2009
-- This might be my most viewed article on this site, proving that there are a lot of cheapskates out there.

"MinuteMaid last night, a couple firsts, and some very good onion rings” – July 21, 2009
-- The slapdash swing of Kaz Matsui and an incredibly ballsy little twerp made for a memorable night at the ballpark.

More about the change at Gravitas...from Scott Tycer” – August 9, 2009
-- Do you remember when this was the biggest local restaurant story?  Do you remember Gravitas?

Gabagool and proshoot” – September 30, 2009
-- These sound better – and taste better – in the original Italian.

“Churrascos and the greatest album in rock history....” – January 23, 2010
-- The wonderful coda for this ensemble, “The Street Parade”, seems to have slipped off the Grooveshark playlist I assembled, but you should still get an idea what I’m after.

The Devil or Ken Hoffman, your choice....” – April 5, 2010
-- There was another piece about the Ken Hoffman-labeled-hot-dog that I nearly titled, “Ken Hoffman proclaims he won’t touch his wiener.”

Kenneally’s…the taste of original Chicago pizza” – November 15, 2010
-- The pizza at Kenneally’s is not only very good, but has some history behind it.

Italian Dining in Houston, and How It Became So (Part 1 of 3)” – April 9, 2011
Italian Dining in Houston, and How It Became So (Part 2 of 3)” – April 9, 2011
Italian Dining in Houston, and How It Became So (Part 2 of 3)” – April 9, 2011
-- Certainly not as stirring as the history of Italian restaurants in New York or even Chicago, but for frequent local restaurant-goers it is an interesting – and modern – tale.

Of course, it was never flaxseed oil” – April 14, 2011
-- Another baseball-related article I posted got pulled by the editorial mandarins because I did not believe that Drayton McLane was a good owner; true story.

When you are going out for Italian, you usually are not going out for Italian” – May 2, 2011
-- There are thousands of restaurants that bill themselves as “Italian”, though very few in practice are.
