Halloween time is fun for us! Lot's of scary costumes, loads of candy, and fun parties everywhere. It's not the same scenario for our 4 legged companions. Costumes can cause many animals an immense amount of fear, too much candy will make them sick, and sugar free, or chocolate candy can kill them.
Often pets escape when doors are being opened to fill "trick or treater" bags . To prevent this, try putting a bowl on the porch, and let the ghosts and goblins get their own. Most times the kids are very good about taking the correct amount. Of course, you can always leave the door open, with storm door locked, to prevent the critters from escaping. This way you can keep an eye on your bowl! Sometimes looking at the costumes thru the door is more fun, and less scary for the 4 legged kids.
Remember if you are having a party of your own, to be sure your animals are safe and secure. It can be especially scary to have all these costumes in your own home, and they may bolt at any open door.
This is also a time when animal abuse goes up. Be sure to bring everyone in for the night. If you have outdoor animals please be sure they are secured in a safe location.
If you are dressing your companion up, please choose the costume carefully. Be sure it fits well, there is plenty of ventilation, and it is not to heavy for their back. You also want to be sure their leash and collar are not covered so they may be restrained properly.
With just a little bit of thought we can make this Halloween safe, happy and fun for everyone, 2 and 4 legged combined.
