When trying to achieve goals it helps to break things down into a series of simple action steps that will enable you to ultimately reach your goal.
Goals usually involve trying to add a new behavior or change an old one. Either way, studies show the way to be successful is to make small, gradual change.
It's important to be realistic, especially in the beginning when deciding on action steps. If you set an action step that's unrealistic and you fail to accomplish it, you feel defeated before you've even gotten started.
This failure makes it difficult to stay on track to accomplish the larger goal.
Choose realistic, easily attainable action steps that you can accomplish which will give you a sense of pride and set you up for success.
Let's use the example of giving up sugar. Your first action step could be to add more fruit and vegetables to your diet. Once you start adding foods that contain more vitamins and minerals you'll feel better and you'll want to eat less sugar.
