It’s a dog’s world this January with dog expos around town

January is going to the dogs with Woofstock, Doggie Palooza and more. Nothing is more exciting for young children than watching and interacting with puppies and dogs – all breeds, sizes and colors. So, pencil in these events on your calendar and then use a dog theme this month to do activities and read books about dogs with your children.

Make a special dog tag…

Whether you have a dog at home or not, invite your children to make fun dog tags to wear. Just like Fido at home, your child can make a tag for himself. First talk about the different names that dogs own and which name your child would like to have if he/she was a puppy. Draw and cut out a bone shape from construction paper marking the dog name with a black marker. Have the kids decorate their bone shapes with crayons and markers. Glitter paint pens are fun too! Attach a length of yarn to the shape and let the children wear their dog collar to the event.

Think up some dog stories…

This is a fun activity to do with your child and their friends. Cut pictures of dogs from old magazines and glue these onto cardboard. Place the pictures in a stack. Together, take turns picking up a dog picture, naming the animal and telling stories about them. Encourage the children by asking questions such as “What does your dog like to do? What color is your dog’s fur? Where does your dog sleep? What does your dog eat? What tricks can your dog do?” and so on. This activity is great for creative thinking and verbalization.
