It's a Bird, It's a Plane, it's a Hostel? A Night at the Jumbo Stay Hostel (Photos)

On a recent trip to Stockholm, Sweden, I took the opportunity to stay at the Jumbo Stay Hostel which is part of the Hostelling International's 'hostel with a difference'. Upon first glance, the Jumbo Stay looks like any other airplane, but once you enter, you'll be greeted by the friendly front desk staff and slippers at the door.

The airplane itself has an interesting history of its own. Since it left the productiion lines, over the years it has been used by Singapore Airlines, Pan Am, then Transjet. When the plane was put up for sale, the opportunity for a unique hostel opened up and the rest is history.

The Jumbo Stay hostel is located near the Arlanda Airport just 25 minutes from Stockholm, Sweden. This makes it a great stay if you have an early flight the next morning, or if you're arriving late in the evening at Arlanda. It's also great if you plan to visit some towns north of Stockholm, for example Sigtuna or Uppsala. Also a bonus, there is a free shuttle from the airport that leaves every 15 minutes to take you to the hostel.

The Jumbo Stay is equipped with a lounge and there is a fridge full of pre-packaged meals, snacks and drinks that can be purchased from reception. If you prefer a cooked meal instead the option is across the street at the hotel restaurant or to hop back onto the shuttle to the airport SkyCity where ther are restaurants, fast food, and convenient stores. Each room has 2-4 bunk beds, and the familiar airplane overhead bins can be used as extra storage. The rooms also have a television and wireless internet access which is great if youw ant to relax. The shared airplane bathrooms have be re-outfitted with showers, and only the sink is a reminder that you're actually on a plan. If you book a suite, you can get your own private shower.

You can book a room through the Jumbo Stay Hostel website, Hostelling International or Hostel Bookers website. If you are a Hostelling International member, you qualify for the member rate. Non-members will be required to pay a supplement. If you plan to stay a few nights at their hostel network, it is definitely worth getting the membership card.
