The Man of Steel may just have made one of the biggest apparel errors of the year.
As comics geeks already know, and has already been reported by sites including Bleeding Cool, DC Comics is "relaunching" its entire character line come September, which means lots of "tweaks" to old favorites: A new costume for Wonder Woman, new backgrounds for Hawkman, even new working legs for Batgirl (who has been confined to a wheelchair for decades).
Yet none seem as odd as the company's choice for Superman's outfit: a blue T-shirt, a short cape and jeans. Now anyone who's anyone knows that jeans don't go wtih a cape. if you're gonna wear a cape, then you have to don the requisite spandex leggings that always accompany such an accoutrement. Placed together. jeans and a cape spell disaster for any self-reepecting super-hero type. Can you imagine Batman in a cowl, white T-shirt and dungarees? We cannot.
Now, yes, of course, the comic featuring Supes in jeans is "Action Comics," which going forward is meant to portray Superman as a younger hero - not quite in control of his powers and not really aware of what constitutes good sartorial taste. Maybe a short cape and jeans is all the rage on Krypton. Superman's home planet. But it's cause for heckling and laughter here on good ol' Earth.
We think readers aged 4 to 94 will find Short-Cape Superman to look, well, silly. And we urge the Greatest Super-Hero the World Has Ever Known to seek out a good suit-and-tie shop, hire a good tailor and find something else to wear - fast.
