Oscar is about pop culture, in particular the American pop culture. And this year the trailer for Oscar 2014 is a nice melody with leading singer and dancer Ellen DeGeneres. The comments at youtube.com seem positive:
BiancaWong: Dancing and singing is more like the Oscars. Let's leave the mean jokes to the Golden Globes. I like Seth, but Ellen is going to be great.
Dina Belenko: My hands were sore from applause. Ellen is truly amazing!
Erica Park: Ellen and the Oscars = Perfect! Can't wait!
RAN DOM: Awesome
There is a problem, however. It is a general problem of how Oscar contributes to cultural reproduction. From this perspectives, just seeing Ellen DeGeneres points to a sort of repetition that society may not need. Six years ago, in 2007, Ellen DeGeneres had her American dream come true - hosting Oscar. Why do we need her again on the Oscar stage? There are so many young American stars who need promotion, attention, care, trust, smile, a hand, an empathy… just love to be put on the Oscar stage as the new generation of new culture – culture of open space for more and more talents. Ellen DeGeneres is like a written book – it can be wonderful, buy already written. Oscar stage needs innovation and not repeating host is probably one of the rules of change that would help this event – still watched by millions.
