It looks like Montero's all ours...and that's a good thing for everyone

Fredy Montero is currently in a scoring drought along with the rest of his Sounders FC team mates. Will news that he's fully a Sounder give Fredy an attitude boost?

Recent reports have surfaced suggesting that Major League Soccer, which handles player contracts centrally for every MLS club, has come to terms with Colombian club Deportivo Cali for full, 100% rights to Seattle Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero.

See reports in this Colombian website and also the Seattle Times.

What a year of transition and turmoil it has been for this young star in the making. It came too easily and expectations rose too high after only a few matches. Then the off-field controversies forced the Colombian to both grow up faster and form a hardened perspective.

The video highlights of a smiling, innocent, goal-scoring Montero shouting "I Love Seattle" don't seem like they are from only a few months ago...they seem years old.

Montero is surely aiming for Europe, but every time that converation arises it does so when Montero is struggling to score goals. Montero bolted out of the gate this year with three goals in two matches, and buzz began that he might not last the year in Seattle. Montero then cooled off for a handful of weeks before going on a five-match scoring tear. The rumors then circulated that Fredy was bound for Fulham in the English Premier League. Since then Montero has again cooled off.

It's time to give this 21-year old a chance to settle his feet in Seattle, and jump to the next level later. It's time for some perspective on a great talent that has yet to fully arrive.

Fredy needs to mean it when he says he's in Seattle to help Sounders FC win. He needs to mean it when he says he's not here to jump ship quickly but to make his move when his play in MLS warrants such a move.

Fredy's not there yet, so he's still here.

And now he's all ours.

He needs to put on the shirt with that knowledge at the front of his mind, and if he ever starts kissing the Sounders FC badge on his shirt again after goals, we'll all know that for now, he means it.

    i like this line:

"Fredy needs to mean it when he says he's in Seattle to help Sounders FC win. He needs to mean it when he says he's not here to jump ship quickly but to make his move when his play in MLS warrants such a move."

You also might have seen the recent quote from Adrian Hanauer that Don Ruiz posted in the Tacoma News Tribune. In it Hanauer says 'no press report' has yet gotten the facts of Montero's contract right so far. So we can only continue to guess, and assume that this latest report from Colombia is another in the line of incorrect ones...
