It is not even the first day of winter, yet the time has come to begin thinking about summer camp options for 2012. Numerous camps exist throughout Colorado and many gifted children enjoy attending summer camps that are not designed solely with the gifted child in mind. If you have a child who would benefit from socialization with other highly gifted peers, however, Colorado does have two summer camps which focus on that specific subset of the gifted population.
Epsilon Math Camp, hosted at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, is one such camp. Epsilon is designed for exceptionally to profoundly gifted children age eight to under age 11 at the time of camp. While definitions vary, the exceptionally to profoundly gifted are generally considered to be children with composite IQ scores above the 99th percentile up to the 99.9th percentile and beyond.
In the summer of 2012, Epsilon will take place from July 29th-August 12th and potential campers must submit IQ and achievement scores above the 99th percentile. The application period opened on October 1, 2011. Epsilon Camp is limited to 40 students each year.
Another option for highly gifted children who are not seeking an academic experience over the summer is the new Yunasa West summer camp, held at Camp Shadybrook in Sedalia, Colorado. Run by the Institute for Educational Advancement, Yunasa West is a new addition to the long running Yunasa summer camp for the highly gifted held each summer in Michigan. Yunasa is open to campers between the ages of 10 and 14 and the focus is on helping highly gifted youth understand that they are more than just their intelligence.
Boulder Gifted Parent Support (GPS) will be hosting an information session about Yunasa West in early 2012. More information regarding this information session can be found on Boulder GPS' website.
