The long awaited announcement came from Geri Lewis, director of the Venice Surf and Skateboard Association (VSA), earlier this week.
On opening day, the brand new 16,000-square-foot public facility will be formally denominated as the Dennis “Polar Bear” Agnew Memorial Skate Park, in memory of the renowned 70’s skater who passed away in 2005.
In a posting on the VSA’s blog, Geri thanked the people and companies that have supported their cause for many years, but also fired up at the kooks trying to jump on the bandwagon now that the park is a reality.
There is plenty of tribulations in the history of this skate park already, from clashes with city officials to fights with event producers and their big money corporate sponsors.
This column reported on the history several times; on the first story, it accurately announced an opening for October. So, you'll have to come back here on the second week of next month for full coverage of the opening event.
In the meantime, take a tour of the construction site with Jesse Martinez.
