It happened to Gabe: Dog surrendered to kill shelter because he grew too big

UPDATE: I am heartbroken to report that Gabe was euthanized last night at the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter. Rest in peace Gabe. We are devastated your life was cut short because your owner was irresponsible.

Gabe is an absolute charmer; he's friendly and gentle with children, but the very essentials desired most by families as they search for the perfect dog didn't amount to a hill of beans for another young, healthy dog surrendered at the high kill San Bernardino City Animal Shelter late last week.

When a volunteer saw Gabe's owner ready to hand over the dog's leash to the receptionist at the shelter, she explained to Gabe's owner that surrendered dogs can be euthanized at any time. When questioned why Gabe was being turned in, the owner simply stated the dog had grown too big for his small apartment.

"Walk him more often and take him out to the park for exercise and make him tired, " the volunteer suggested, but the moment she thought Gabe's owner might have reconsidered, the dog received a final pat on the head and the man was gone. Gabe just stared - completely unaware that the human he loved stepped out of his life without a shred of remorse.

And now Gabe, the beautiful tan and white pit bull mix who was surrendered on June 28 sits alone in his kennel. His roommate, Hercules, was rescued; he was another beautiful dog dumped by his family, but now all that has changed.

A volunteer for the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter says this about Gabe:

Cari NO Bsl Ennis: "He is a charmer! Loves everyone and dog friendly. Was kenneled with Hercules who got rescued. Kid friendly too!"

Please share Gabe's story with your friends, family and coworkers. It only takes a few moments to send this article over to someone else who just be the perfect family to fill the hole in Gabe's heart. Tragically, the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter is a high kill facility, and there are no promises a dog will see the morning sun.
