According to the Canadian Press, the International Skating Union has suspended American short track speed skater Simon Cho on Sunday for two years for tampering with Canadian Olivier Jean's skates at the 2011 World Team Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Warsaw, Poland.
Cho reportedly confessed to the despicable violation in 2012, but claimed he tampered with Jean's skates at the request of his coach, Jae Su Chun.
Chun, despite denying his role in the incident, was also suspended two years.
Cho was a serious medal contender in the men's 500m at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. At the 2011 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Sheffield, England, Cho won the gold medal, with Jean winning the silver medal.
Jean of Lachenaie, Quebec, reigning Olympic gold medalist Charles Hamelin of Levis, Quebec and reigning world champion Liang Wenhao of China are the current favourites for medals in the men's 500m short track speed skating event at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
Both Jean and Hamelin were also part of the Canadian team that won a gold medal in the men's 5000m relay in short track speed skating at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
