Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released a statement yesterday following a federal court ruling not to dismiss the committee’s lawsuit against the Department of Justice over its refusal to produce subpoenaed documents related to Operation Fast and Furious “gunwalking.” U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued a memorandum opinion yesterday denying Justice’s motion to end the case.
"This ruling is a repudiation of the Obama Justice Department and Congressional Democrats who argued the courts should have no role in the dispute over President Obama's improper assertion of executive privilege to protect an attempted Justice Department cover-up of Operation Fast and Furious,” Issa claimed. “I remain confident in the merits of the House's decision to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt; this ruling is an important step toward the transparency and accountability the Obama Administration has refused to provide."
Whether that confidence will be borne out has been a matter of no small amount of skepticism in a gun rights community weary of the stonewalling, interminable delays, and the seeming lack of any meaningful repercussions. The prevailing sentiment expressed by readers at Gun Rights Examiner and Sipsey Street Irregulars -- where the initial reports on the government-sanctioned gun smuggling operation were made, where the Congress was pressured to protect the whistleblowers and investigate their allegations, and where “legitimate news media” was urged to investigate and report on their own -- has been one of cynicism that justice will be forthcoming, and resignation that killings using the “walked” guns will continue regardless.
