Israeli Gangnam Style: Soldiers from the Israeli Defense Forces are being punished after stopping their armed patrol to dance, Gangnam Style, at a Palestinian wedding. The men, who diverted their patrol in the West Bank neighborhood of Hebron, have danced up a storm of criticism, says The Huffington Post on Aug. 29.
Hearing the song “Gangnam Style” by South Korean singer Psy, the soldiers, in full gear, flak jackets and armed, went into the party and got their groove on, much to the chagrin of the Israeli military.
An Israeli military spokesman called the incident “serious,” and said “the soldiers exposed themselves to unnecessary danger and were disciplined accordingly.” The men were suspended pending investigation into the incident.
Hebron was a center of violence between Israelis and Palestinians for decades. While the actions may occur the wrath of the military, the video certainly shows it was a joyous occasion.
Israeli soldiers dancing side by side with Palestinians, even allowing the men the hoist the soldiers onto their shoulders, is an occurrence that, for at least a few moments, likely made both forget about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and violence ongoing since the mid 20th century.
Who knew that the Arab and Israeli differences could be put on abeyance, just for a few hours even, because of a viral, billion-hit YouTube dance and song performed by a strange looking South Korean musician.
