Israel preps for rocket attacks

Israel continues to meet rocket attacks by militants with offensive airstrikes in the Hamas-ruled Gaza strip today. President Obama, who remained silent regarding the recent kidnapping and murder of three Jewish boys, including an American citizen, now urges both sides to exercise restraint.

"Operation Protective Edge" seeks to eliminate Hamas' terror infrastructure operating against the State of Israel and its civilians. Benjamin Natanyahu's spokesman, Mark Regev stated, “We have repeatedly warned Hamas that this must stop and Israel’s defense forces are currently acting to put an end of this once and for all.”

While the murder of the Palestinian teen was widely condemned by Israelis, Palestinians celebrated the death of the Jewish teens by passing out sweets and dancing in the streets.

How do Israelis prep for constant bombardment?

Those living in homes built after 1992 have bunker rooms, or the Mamad, or merhav mugan dirati, which means "apartment protected space" as most Israelis live in apartment buildings. When the sirens sound, they take shelter in these reinforced concrete rooms with a heavy metal door and window shutters. Since space is limited, this room usually doubles as a home office, playroom or mashan (storeroom), leaving enough space for everyone to take cover when the need arises.

Some Israelis may stock their mamad with the recommended emergency items: water, food, and gas masks. However, only about 60% of Israelis have gas masks for their families and many do not use the mamad for safety, but for storage alone. Many shrug and say, ain ma la’asot "what can I do?"

Perhaps when one lives with the constant knowledge they could be attacked and killed by the end of the day, they become desensitized to danger or prepping seems hopeless.

How would you prepare in the event of a rocket attack? Why do you think so many Israelis fail to vigilantly prepare? Weigh in.
