Israel claims to have captured an Iranian spy as he was about to board a plane out of the country. He was carrying photos of the US Embassy. Ali Mansouri, who is a dual citizen of Iran and Belgium, was looking to set up business ties in Israel. He entered Israel using a Belgian passport using the name of Alex Mans.
The incident coincided with Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit to the United States to discuss Iran's nuclear weapons program. Shin Bet said that Mansouri had been recruited by the Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and had already visited Israel twice before he ws arrested.
Shin Bet found photographs on Mansouri were of strategic areas of the US embassy in Tel Aviv and were later released as proof of his crimes. Photos included the rooftop of the embassy, a picture of a cafe next to the embassy and the baggage claim area at the airport.
Iran accused Israel of lying about the arrest and said Israel was using it for propaganda purposes.
Israel has been very worried about the nuclear talks between Iran and the US. They claim that Iran will never bargain in good faith, but will use the meetings to stall for time and to attempt to get sanctions lifted. Their suspicions could be bolstered by this arrest, as it would demonstrate hostility at a time when negotiations for peace are going on.
