A few students at SDSU who came to StandWithUs.com asking for help with a problem.
A map of the Middle East was distributed on the second day of an Arabic 101 class at San Diego State University without Israel, and instead: "Palestine" listed in its place.
With no context given to the students about the map, no explanation, and no discussion to frame the reasons for why that particular map was being used - the students were unsure of how to handle the situation.
Speak up and risk their semester grades on the 2nd day of class?
Or worse, risk their ongoing standing with the professor and their future standing in the department if they were labeled as "troublemakers"?
None of those options were viable - so they turned to their local community for help.
The community rallied together and answered the students request for help -with an overwhelming outpouring and show of support.
A flood of concerned letters were sent to the offices of the head of the Middle East and Linguistics department at SDSU, the SDSU administration, the SDSU alumni association and local news stations from individuals, pro-Israel organizations, and other professors and educators; prompting the SDSU administration to take immediate action to resolve the situation.

Students receive and apology and a new map.
Yesterday a new map was handed out to the students and an apology was given to them regarding the use of the original, misleading map that was distributed.
