The Albuquerque Isotopes will play their final two games of the season with a 23-man roster.
Right-handers Stephen Fife and Peter Moylan, catcher Drew Butera, first baseman-outfielder Scott Van Slyke and middle infielder Dee Gordon earned promotions to the big leagues on the first day rosters can expand from 25 to up to 40 players.
At the same time, infielder Rusty Ryal was traded to the Los Angeles Angels organization for cash considerations.
Ryal had been on the disabled list but was not actually injured. He hit .265 with four home runs and 49 RBI this season for Albuquerque, playing mostly first base. Ryal will join the Salt Lake Bees in time for their upcoming Pacific Coast League playoff series against the Las Vegas 51s.
To at least field a competitive roster, the Isotopes activated right-handed reliever Luis Vasquez and catchers Steve Cilladi and Damaso Espino from the DL.
Vasquez had a 1.69 ERA in seven games this season for Albuquerque while Espino hit .321 with four RBI and Cilladi was 0-for-7.
Among the call-ups, Fife was just 2-4 with a 6.03 ERA for the Isotopes but fared much better (4-3, 2.47) with the Dodgers earlier this year. Moylan went 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA and four saves out of the bullpen. He will be a middle reliever while the Dodgers said Fife's exact role is uncertain as they already have six starting pitcheres on the roster.
Butera (.135, 3 RBI) will be the third-string catcher behind former Isotopes A.J. Ellis and Tim Federowicz. Van Slyke (.348, 12 HR, 48 RBI) will serve as a right-handed pinch hitter and backup corner outfielder and first baseman. Gordon (.297, 33 RBI, 49 stolen bases) may only be used as a pinch runner after he led the PCL in steals.
Six players on the 40-man roster were not called up, perhaps most notably closer Javy Guerra (0-4, 3.52, 11 saves).
"We've talked about Javy a bit, but the guys that are here, are here," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told TrueBlueLA.com. "He's not on the immediate radar."
Among those hoping for call-ups after the Triple-A season ends Tuesday, right-hander Chris Withrow (4-0, 1.78) figures to return to Los Angeles. The fates of right-hander Matt Magill (5-2, 3.49), infielder Justin Sellers (.270, 6 HR, 65 RBI), infielder-outfielder Elian Herrera (.283, 7 HR, 43 RBI) and outfielder Alex Castellanos (.260, 19 HR, 61 RBI) are uncertain.
Those players and the other remaining Isotopes will play New Orleans in the penultimate game of the season today at 5 p.m.
