On October 15th, the New York Islanders faced the Buffalo Sabres on home ice in the Nassau Coliseum. The first period went back and forth, until a Frans Nielsen wrist shot at 13:11 put the Islanders ahead 1-0. The Islanders would end the period, although their lead wouldn't stand long.
At 05:24 in the second period, Tyler Ennis of the Sabres would score a wrist shot of his own to tie the game at 1-1. About two minutes later, Matt Martin would answer back, retaking the lead for the Islanders at 08:08. A little over a minute after Matt Martins goal, Thomas Vanek of the Sabres would get a goal to once again tie the game at 2-2 at the 09:19 mark. After two periods of physicality from both teams, Eric Boulton and Cody McCormick would receive five minute penalties after throwing off the gloves.
The third period would prove to be a fight from both ends of the ice. At 08:44, Matt Moulson would put the Islanders ahead with a goal. After a few boarding penalties and an interference call, the Sabres would go on to tie the game at 3-3 with a Marcus Faligno wrist shot with only two minutes left in the third period.
The Islanders and the Sabres would remain scoreless at the end of overtime, sending the Islanders into their third shootout of the season. Matt Moulson remains perfect in the shootout moving his shootout stats to 3 for 3, after scoring the first goal in the shootout. Thomas Vanek would beat Evgeni Nabokov, however, to tie it. Frans Nielsen and John Tavares would both come up short of a goal, allowing Tyler Ennis' goal to give the Sabres the 4-3 victory.
The Edmonton Oilers will travel to the Nassau Coliseum on Thursday October 17th, to play the Islanders. Puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. EST.
