Spring is a good time to reflect on how fortunate we are as Long Islanders to have such grocery and food abundance at our fingertips. Unfortunately, there are still some of our neighbors who still work hard all day and go to bed hungry. Island Harvest is marking their 20th year Anniversary by continuing to strive to make a difference in this unfortunate situation. You can too.
Currently there are 2 Island Harvest events that are scheduled for this April.
Home Run to End Hunger on April 23, 2012.
Island Harvest joins with The Mets at Citi Field for their 50th Anniversary where they will be playing the San Francisco Giants. Tickets are available for you to sit in a designated box along with other doners and enjoy a buffet with beverages while watching the game and making a difference.
Challenge to Stretch Your Support to End Hunger
This is an ongoing fundraising campaign through April, 2012.
Philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein, CEO of The Feinstein Foundation, will augment contributions to Island Harvest made before April 30th, 2012. So whatever you can give will go that much farther to help get food to nearly 300,000 Long Islanders at-risk of hunger. Contribute here.
Island Harvest was created in 1992 by Linda Breitstone, a sassy lady who was infuriated that food from a local convenience store was being thrown away at the end of the day – with a safe house for women and children down the street. In response, she established Island Harvest and thier mission, “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.”
Be like Linda Breitstone! Start your own food drive!
Running a food drive is a fun and creative way to get your community involved in ending hunger on Long Island. The canned and packaged food collected will be distributed to more than 500 member agencies and programs in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Let's set a trend today by partnering with Island Harvest and hosting a food drive through your business, school, club, church or other organization. Here is some help you get started. You can also drop in to a Current Food Drive too!
