Rick Moeller of Islamorada landed top honors at the Backcountry Fly Championship that ended Feb. 23, 2013.
Moeller, teamed with Islamorada's Captain Mark Gilman, tallied 105 inches of redfish and snook for the overall win. He also caught both of the event's largest species, a 27-inch redfish and a 28-inch snook, as well as scoring a second redfish at 26.5 inches and a second snook that measured 23.5 inches.
The team was awarded custom-engraved Nautilus fly reels.
Tournament anglers competed to catch the most inches of snook and redfish on fly, and rules mandated that only two catches of each species over the two days of fishing could be counted toward an anglers total inches.
Frank Criscola of Brielle, N.J., earned the runner-up angler award. He fished with Captain Chris Jones of Islamorada.
Eight teams caught 27 snook and 31 redfish during the tournament.
By popular demand, a similarly formatted Backcountry Fall Fly Championship event is to be scheduled for October 2013.
