An Islamic extremist training suicide bombers in Iraq accidentally set off explosives while giving a demonstration on Monday, killing himself and 21 of his students.

The commander at a secluded terrorist training camp north of Baghdad unwittingly used a belt packed with explosives while conducting a demonstration early Monday for a group of Islamic militants in training, killing himself and 21 would-be terrorists, according to a report issued Feb. 10 by the New York Times.

The explosion took place at an insurgents' camp near the town of Samarra, 60 miles north-west of Baghdad. The area around the mainly Sunni city of Samarra, in Salah al-Din province, has long been an insurgent stronghold.

The Islamic militants belonged to a network now known as the Islamic State of Iraq, an al-Qaida breakaway group that dominates the Sunni insurgency in Iraq.

BBC reports the explosives-filled vehicle was being escorted from the insurgents' compound to a main road when it blew up.

The dead instructor has not been named, but he was described as an experienced operative who specialised in training and recruitment. The terrorists in training were attending a lesson on making car bombs and explosive belts when a glitch set off one of the devices during the car bomb part of the demonstration.

In addition to the 22 militants who were killed, 15 others were wounded in the explosion.
