The Prophet Muhammad, may Allaah (swt) bless him and grant him peace, stated:

He who built a mosque for Allah, Allah would build a house for him like it in Paradise. (Bukhari, Muslim)

Whoever builds a masjid for the sake of Allah, even if it is like the nest of a sand grouse, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise. (Ahmad)

Islamic teachings encourage Muslims to give charity during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Giving for the building of masjid (mosque) has special blessings because people will benefit from the gift long after the donor has died.

When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendent who prays for him.

The Islamic Community Center of Anchorage Alaska ICCAA, Inc.)
is raising money to build the FIRST masjid and community center in Alaska.

Alaska has about 3,000 Muslims and the community is very diverse, including African Americans, Caucasians, Albanians, South Asians, Africans, Middle Eastern, Indonesians, Malaysians, Alaska Natives and others. Currently, Muslims pray in a rented unit at a local shopping mall.

With respect to the proposed masjid, the website states in part:

“Alhamdulilah, with the Help of Allah (SWT), the All-Mighty, we your brothers and sisters in Anchorage, Alaska are happy to announce that we have begun a new phase of our Masjid building project by purchasing a 70,000 sq ft lot on the Old Seward Highway and 80th Street in Anchorage. This important step in our efforts to build the first Masjid in Alaska, which took us many years and was made possible by generous contributions from within our community and by help of many brothers and sisters from other Islamic communities, Jazak Allahu Khairan. The purchase price of $600,000 to buy the land was paid in full. The land has a beautiful mountain view and will make a wonderful location for our future Masjid! The city zoning of the lot has no restrictions that would preclude the establishment of a religious building on it, community center and school.”

I lived in Alaska for a year and its scenery is absolutely awe-inspiring. Alaska is the largest state in the United States and Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska. Anchorage also is one of the most diverse cities for its size with over 90 languages spoken and 30% of its population self-identifying as non-Caucasian. A masjid, Islamic school, and community center will add greatly to this majestic setting.
