According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter on March 6, Isaiah Washington will reprise the role of Dr. Preston Burke on “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Seven years after being fired for making an anti-gay remark aimed at co-star T.R. Knight, Washington will be returning to the ABC medial drama. His return comes as the show is preparing to say goodbye to actress Sandra Oh. As both Oh and Washington’s characters were engaged on the show, bringing back Dr. Burke is essential and a proper way to “say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang,” said show creator and head writer, Shonda Rhimes.

Since being fired from “Grey’s Anatomy”, Washington was recently cast in The CW’s “The 100”. The casting was his first series regular role since the anti-gay incident that sent him packing. Washington apologized for his comments and commended Knight on his courage to “come out” as a result of the incident.

It was a learning experience for Isaiah Washington and LGBT watchdog group, GLAAD, is praising his return to the show.

“His PSA and his statements promoting marriage equality in recent years have sent a strong message of support for LGBT people. We look forward to seeing him return to one of our favorite shows.”

Washington also has a role in the movie “Blackbird”, directed by director Patrik Ian-Polk. The movie is about a young man coming out in a small Southern town.

Isaiah Washington’s guest return on “Grey’s Anatomy” has not yet been announced. The show will be wrapping up its tenth season in May.
