He’s BACK! Actor Isaiah Washington is set to reprise his role as Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy. Fans of the show will recall the untimely exit of Washington’s character seven years ago when he used homophobic slurs towards his co-star T. R. Knight.
With the exit of actress Sandra Oh’s character who plays the love interest of Washington’s character it is only fitting that Washington make a surprise comeback to the medical drama.
According to Entertainment Weekly, creator of the show Shonda Rhimes said, “That the character’s return is an integral part of providing closure to Cristina Yang, whose portrayer Oh is set to leave the series at the end of this season. ”It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” Rhimes said. “Burke is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”
Washington has since apologized and the organization GLAAD that works to protect and promote positive images of gay and lesbian people in the media has praised Washington according to the Hollywood reporter. "His PSA and his statements promoting marriage equality in recent years have sent a strong message of support for LGBT people, "We look forward to seeing him return to one of our favorite shows, as well as in Patrik-Ian Polk's moving film Blackbird about a young man coming out in a small Southern town."
Comedian and actress Mo’Nique will star alongside Washington in the film Blackbird. The film will be shown at Outfest Fusion the LBGT People of Color Film Festival, held in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on March 14-16. Washington can also be seen in the new television series 100, premiering Wednesday, March 19 at 9 p.m. on the CW network.
