Various media outlets are reporting that actor, Isaiah Washington, has been paged to come back to the hospital for an upcoming episode. Washington originated the role of Dr. Preston Burke on the medical drama in 2005 and his guest appearance will coincide with the departure of Sandra Oh whose character, Cristina Yang, was Burke’s love interest.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ show-runner Shonda Rhimes states, “Burke is vital to that journey—he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

Washington, 50, was fired from the series for making comments about then-costar T. R. Knight’s sexual orientation. Their on-set argument led to Knight’s coming out as gay. But after Washington made his views known again backstage at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards, things began to change drastically for the actor even though he later made a public apology.

“I lost everything,” Washington said. “I couldn’t afford to have an agent…I couldn’t afford to have a publicist…I couldn’t afford to continue.”

The exact date of Washington’s episode has not been announced.
