Each week during the high school sports season the Eastern Maine High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week.
You can send your nominations to Marc @ easternmainesportsblog@yahoo.com. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination.
All stats for the week may not be included if they were not sent in with the nomination.
2012/2013 Winter season- Week 13- February 25th- March 2nd
Male
Isaiah Bess- Penquis- Basketball- Recorded 27 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 61-54 state championship victory over Boothbay. It is the first state title for Penquis since 2000. Bess is the first male and second student/athlete to win five athlete of the week honors. This is the third AOW for Bess during the 2012/2013 winter season. Zach Gilpin- Hampden- Basketball- Scored 23 points in 45-41 class A state final victory over South Portland.
Other nominations
Trevor Lyford- Penquis- Basketball- Recorded 20 points including 12-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter in 61-54 state championship victory over Boothbay.
Justin Courtney- Bangor- Hockey- Scored two goals including the game winner in 8-5 quarterfinal victory over Maranacook.
Parker Sanderson- Bangor- Hockey- Scored two goals and had one assist in 8-5 quarterfinal victory over Maranacook.
Matthew Closson- Hampden- Hockey- Scored two goals in 5-4 quarterfinal victory over Orono.
Michael Michaud- Presque Isle- Hockey- Scored three goals including the game winner with 46 left in overtime and had two assists in 7-6 quarterfinal upset over Brewer.
